Quilts and other hand made by Barbara items from Vicki

The picture quilt must have been made in the early 70s because I remember Mom had it on her bed when I was a sophomore in high school.  This quilt was inspired by our childhood art.  So each of the picture blocks has our name and age written by it.  Amy did the bear and the fish.  Kiva did the big dragon.  Diane and I did cats.  We had the same second grade teacher who did this art project every year.  My cat is the demure kitty and Diane’s is the scary Halloween cat.  Milt made the orange bird.  I don’t know who did the Ground Hog square, but I think it must have been either Amy or Kiva.    I’m not sure when Mom wove the Cochrane Tartan for all of us, but I think it was an early project – maybe a year or two after she retired from the Post Office.  I know that she made a strip for each of us kids. The matching Easter outfits were an annual event, but I only have picture of these ...

Quilts and other creations in Amy's keeping

Mom created and gifted so many things. Everything from large, beautiful quilts representing months of work, to smaller items she knew would make life easier or more beautiful. Our master bedroom is made brighter and warmer by this falling leaves quilt she gave me years ago. When it arrived, she phoned me and  emphasized that it should not be left on a shelf as a "work of art", but that she wanted us to use it, enjoy it, and if washing was needed. to go ahead and wash it. As you can see, it has been well loved--it has been on our bed for years. It is hand quilted in patterns that make the veins of the leaves. One day I will take a less-tattered part of it and put in a frame. But not yet!   This is the wedding quilt that Mom made for Jay and I in 1982. She asked our relatives to each donate a quilt square, and she pieced and hand quilted it.  These two quilts Mom created when we adopted Katie in 2004. Well-wishers (which included family as well as others who were...

I will add more pictures soon!  Grandma working on mending the Ducks In A Row for Nichole. I don't think she really knew what she was getting into when she agreed to mend this! Lol!! But she was a good sport! It became one of her last "to-do's" and it was important to her that it get finished! Many hands went into mending this quilt.  Here is Ducks in a Row! Part original part new, all love! Thank you to all who helped Grandma get it finished! It's back on my bed where it's been for the last 30 years she wrote a note saying it should be good for "at least another 30 years". Nichole So many fond memories of my grandmother. So grateful that when little 4 year old me requested a pink quilt, she thought practically about which pink would stand the ages. I love this quilt and am happy to have it brighten my bedroom, especially during Sweden's long, dark winter nights. Kimberly This is a quilt made for Nathan. Love Postage Stamp Quilt d...

Quilts and more from Kiva's house

Mom created and hand quilted many quilts throughout her life.  I am lucky enough to house several. I went off to college with this will quilt. It kept me snuggly warm. Mom made this chicken quilt in the early 80's.  She made another copy recently that hangs in her house.                              She made wedding quilts. Friends and family of the happy couple were asked to contribute quilt squares.  Mom pieced them together and hand quilted them.  She also made the medallion in the middle of this quilt.              She made baby quilts for the grandchildren...                                                Sienna's         ...
